Equal Pay Day
April 22, 2008

"Equal Pay Day was originated by the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) in 1996 as a public awareness event to illustrate the gap between men's and women's wages. The day, observed on a Tuesday in April, symbolizes how far into the year a woman must work, on average, to earn as much as a man earned the previous year. (Tuesday is the day on which women's wages catch up to men's wages from the previous week.) Because women earn less, on average, than men, they must work longer for the same amount of pay. The wage gap is even greater for most women of color."

Women's Studies encourages everyone to wear something red that day to help raise public awareness of this issue.

Gender and Negotiation: The Power of Negotiating

Did you miss this event?  Check out Dr. Croson's slides.

April 9, 2008 at 4:00 pm in ENV 110 (Environmental Sciences Bldg.)
Generously co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Rachel Croson

--
By not negotiating a first salary, an individual stands to lose more than $500,000 by age 60 -- and men are more than four times as likely as women to negotiate a first salary.

-- Women own about 40 percent of all businesses in the U.S. but receive only 2.3 percent of the available equity capital needed for growth. Male-owned companies receive the other 97.7 percent.

-- Women are more pessimistic about how much is available when they do negotiate and so they typically ask for and get less when they do negotiate--on average, 30 percent less than men.

                                         ~~ from http://www.womendontask.com/stats.html

According to recent statistics, the number of women and men in the American workforce is almost equal.  But women and men have marked differences in how they negotiate salaries, job conditions, and even work/life balance issues.

Dr. Rachel Croson will describe these gender differences and provide suggestions on how both women and men can develop the ability and willingness to negotiate, especially in employment situations.

Dr. Rachel Croson received her Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 1994. After thirteen years at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, she joined The University of Texas at Dallas in 2007.  She also serves at the Director of The Negotiations Center, an interdisciplinary research center aimed at producing and promoting research on the boundaries of economics, psychology, and business.
